Frowning Hours
Frowning Hours is a new Indie Folk project created by Ger Kelly, who studied acting at Trinity College, Dublin and has worked in theatre for the past 15 years. Ger has performed on stages such as The Abbey, The Gate, and The Olympia, appearing in plays by O'Casey, Shakespeare, and more.
He lent his haunting voice to numerous productions, including original scores by composer Tom Lane and classic musicals by Sondheim. It was during this time that he realized his talent for songwriting and attempted to study at BIMM. However, he had to exit the course early due to a theatre job.
Ger has amassed a devoted following of fans who are eagerly anticipating the release of his own music. While he has been busy balancing his acting career with his newfound passion for music-making, he has taken the time to craft a message that is both meaningful and impactful. Now, he is ready to share his music with the world and showcase his unique voice and style.
Ger is a multi-talented musician who has spent the last decade perfecting his debut EP. He has performed on some of the biggest stages in Ireland, including Whelan's, Electric Picnic, and All Together Now, and has even opened for well-known artists such as Mick Flannery and Susan O'Neill.
Despite the challenges of the pandemic, Ger used the time to take a breather and curate his music, resulting in an EP that is sure to impress.
Ger will soon be seen in the upcoming Netflix series 'Bodkin' as Teddy, a burly blacksmith with an incredible singing voice.
Frowning Hours plays Whelan’s Jun 20th at 8.00PM
Tupac - Changes
I probably shouldn’t have been listening to Tupac in primary school but I was. I had the cassette single (I think I got it off my cousin) and I was listening to it on repeat for the longest time. I remember the distinct feeling of actually believing the words that the artist was saying for the first time in my life.
Holden & Thompson - Nothing (93 Returning Mix)
I got really into dance music as a teenager. I was a bit of a bedroom DJ, making mixtapes for anyone who would listen. I remember jumping for joy when I found this tune. The breakdown is still one of the most beautiful vocal melodies I’ve ever heard.
The Streets - Blinded By The Lights
The simple yet vivd story. The bitter sweet refrain. Mike Skinner giving a masterclass in storytelling. The Streets were very much a bridge from the land of dance back to poetry and melody intertwined for me.
Damien Rice - Cannonball
I was on lunch from school and this was playing in the background. I hadn’t heard vulnerability in a song like that before and the acoustic guitar playing was hypnotic. The movie ‘Closer’ came out around that time too and his music was all over it. I couldn’t play guitar then but I definitely would’ve ruined some parties if I could.
Feist - When I Was A Young Girl
I was hooked on this song and the whole album for ages. I still go back to it a lot. It felt like it was from another time. Such a foreboding number. I love Leslie.
The Libertines - Horror Show
The messy and raw buzz! The live buzz! But yet still so tight as a band. These lads were my introduction to that kind of Indie Rock Post Punk thing. I got into ‘The Strokes’ through ‘The Libertines’ and not vice versa. Geeked out on some romantic poetry because of Pete too.
My Brightest Diamond - We Were Sparkling
A friend introduced me to Shara’s music when I was in college and I’ve been following her work ever since. She has one of the most beautiful voices I’ve ever heard and her compositions and lyrics are just so tasteful. You can tell you’re listening to someone with a deep deep well of musical knowledge and influences.
Jeff Buckley - The Way Young Lovers Do (Live @ Sin E)
Now… I adore Van The Man of course but Jeff took this song and brought it to scat, jazz fusion, improvised, Fender Telecaster, reverb, vocal HEAVEN! I still can’t believe it’s just him and one guitar in a little cafe. North Star stuff.
Midlake - Roscoe
My mate played this on vinyl for me. The harmonies and melodies blew me away. It was a real moment for me. We played a load of cover gigs after it and just kept introducing ourselves as The Roscoe’s haha!
Courtney Barnett - Small Poppies
I owe a lot to Courtney as a songwriter. She seems so unashamedly herself. When I’m listening to her it feels like I’m hanging out with someone who’s so much cooler than me and I’m taking little life notes. The line in this song “I used to hate myself but now I think I’m alright” made me cry.
