Leah Rose
On the May 21st, 2021 emerging pop songwriter and producer Leah Rose will independently release her debut single ‘Goodnight’. The single will be accompanied by a lyric video made by the artist herself.
The melancholic hue of ‘Goodnight’ arises from the sentimentality of a writer reflecting on a landscape they no longer exist in. The song was written and recorded in lockdown and is a prime example of how an artists’ time in isolation can result in the inevitable dissection of their past. Sonically, ‘Goodnight’ was inspired by artists such as Lorde, The Weeknd and Charli XCX.
Leah Rose is a Cork-born artist who has spent the last 5 years based in Dublin. She spent much of that time honing her craft, finding inspiration in lyricists such as Alex Turner and Lana Del Rey. Strong imagery and colour play a huge role in Leah’s songwriting. Growing up with artists for parents meant that Leah was exposed to a range of visual art forms at a young age. She strives to create art not only through music but through her artwork, photography and overall visual aesthetic.
“I see my songwriting style as atmospheric and somewhat abstract. I love being able to use music as a tool to materialise the things I see in my mind. So when I write a song I try to place the listener right in the centre of my memories and daydreams”.
‘Goodnight’ marks the debut of Leah Rose, but is the first taste of things to come in 2021.
Promiscuous - Nelly Furtado ft. Timbaland
This is a song that was a favourite of mine as a kid and I still find to be today. I’ve come to realise what I love most about this song is the production, I never get tired of hearing that Iconic bright synth line come in on the chorus.
High By The Beach - Lana Del Rey
I love how 'High By The Beach’ holds back on the verses before completely transporting us on each chorus. The impeccable layering of Lana’s vocals heavily contribute to the chant like chorus melody that I find to be both hypnotic and mesmerising. It’s so hazy and dreamy and I love it!
I Wanna Be Adored - The Stone Roses
‘I Wanna Be Adored’ creates a sense of anticipation in the intro that for me never disappoints. Lyrically I really enjoy the simplicity of this song and all those great guitar riffs. It’s a song I just really love.
Seven A.M. - The Blue Nile
I’m drawn to the melancholic nature of ‘Seven A.M.’ that’s perpetuated by it’s the sparse production style. There’s so many different things weaving in and out through the course of the song that work so well together.
Little Lies - Fleetwood Mac
Like so many others I adore Fleetwood Mac and Tango In The night is one of my favourite albums. ‘Little Lies’ is a song I’ve listened to my whole life but the strength of the melodies and the vocal harmonies continue to impress me time and time again.
On The Level - Mac DeMarco
I was lucky enough to hear this one live which only solidified my affection for it. It’s hard for me not to enjoy something with a nice bright synth line in it, which in the case of ‘On The Level’ is the primary melodic hook.
Underwater - Porches
The production on this song is just so great, I always feel like I’m underwater when I listen to it which I’m sure is the intent given the name of the song. I love how minimal the production is and how each component of the arrangement feels like it’s serving a purpose.
Style - Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift is one of my favourite artists, and with her enormous discography I find inspiration in a lot of her music, but ‘Style’ is one song in particular I come back to over and over again. For me it’s just a timeless pop song I never get sick of, it’s one of those “god I wish I wrote this” kind of a song for me.
Little Dark Age - MGMT
I really love dark pop, It’s a devision of the pop genre I get very inspired by. Whenever I listen to ‘Little Dark Age’ I feel like it’s Halloween and I love Halloween. Lyrically ‘Little Dark Age’ takes on somewhat of a sinister tone yet sonically it makes me want to get up and dance. I like when a song can do that, I think it gives an extra layer of depth.
Starboy - The Weeknd
Daft Punk and The Weeknd working together to no surprise resulted in some great music. ‘Starboy’ has such a strong beat that remains in place throughout the majority of the track, that overall gives the song a commanding presence. I often turn to this song as a source of inspiration, particularly in regards to production.
