Nicha

Nicha is a 22 year old singer/songwriter from Holywood, Northern Ireland. Having grown up listening to Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and Bob Marley her music and writing is heavily influenced by these legends. More recently inspiration stems from hip hop, pop and electronic influences drawing on artists such as Loyle Carner, Jack Johnson, Tash Sultana, Moloko and Bonobo. She creates a warm and easy-listening atmosphere in her performance whilst putting passion into her writing in the hope that her songs will connect with her audience.

Her aim with her music is to send a message and create songs that people will think about. A lot of inspiration for her writing comes from her own personal experiences and struggles as well as those of friends and family. Recently nicha has been writing about technology, environmental issues, mental health and the world as it is around us. She wants to help people with her music and draw awareness to current issues we face day to day in a powerful yet easy-listening way.

The emerging young artist has already seen success in her music with radio play on BBC Radio Ulster and RTE 2FM. With her debut single 'Devices' taking the sound waves by storm, nicha is one to watch with more exciting releases in the pipelines.

  • Sweet Home Alabama – Lynyrd Skynyrd

This song made me pick up a guitar! Something about that little intro riff really made me want to learn it. How could you not like this song really? It’s a feel good summer anthem of the top tier. I don’t think I’d be a musician if it weren’t for ‘Sweet Home Alabama’.

  • Superstar - Jamelia

This was another childhood classic for me. When I was about 10, at a friends’ disco party, I just wasn’t feeling the tunes so I was outside playing by myself for most of the party. Then - Superstar came on. It struck a chord somewhere in me and I was straight in there to the d-floor, no one could stop me.

  • Bambro Koyo Ganda - Bonobo

This song is absolutely beautiful. I think the drop in this track is one of my favourite things in the world. It builds and builds until all of a sudden, you’re taken over by goose bumps. Listening to this song definitely releases endorphins.

  • White Gloves – Khruangbin

Another sensational track that makes you feel like you’re lying in the grass on a sunny day, floating around in a big trippy dream-world. I’ve been obsessed with Khruangbin recently, they have such a unique sound, very atmospheric. I’m always in the mood to listen to them.

  • 3 a.m – Eminem

The rhyming Eminem uses is class. His music has taught me a lot about thinking outside the box when it comes to rhyming and story-telling. I learnt the words to this song to try and impress a boy once and it didn’t work.

  • Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right – Bob Dylan

I love the message in this song – “don’t think twice, it’s alright”. Bob Dylan taught me a lot about story-telling through lyrics, in a slightly different way to Eminem. Learning this on guitar was a huge accomplishment too, the finger-picking is mental! Bought some harmonicas recently inspired by Bob Dylan too, we’ll see how that goes.

  • Little Wing – Jimi Hendrix

This is guitar lick gold-mine! Jimi Hendrix is a big inspiration to me for guitar playing. His lyrics were cool too, very out-there. He taught me that lyrics don’t always need to make a lot sense.

  • Jamming – Bob Marley

Bob Marley fuelled my childhood with reggae and nowadays, I can definitely hear his influence in the songs I write. I always find myself strumming a reggae groove when I’m on auto-pilot.

  • The Rain Song - Led Zeppelin

This song is just perfect. You know when a song brings you right back to a moment? That’s what this song does for me. If it comes on I time travel back to that moment against my will – I’m not complaining though!

  • Cosmo Sheldrake – Mr Jukes - Wriggle (Mr Jukes edit)

This is my “listening to right now” song. The production is outrageously cool, I love how nonsensical the lyrics are and the beat is naughty! My favourite tune at the moment.
