Laoise Fitzgerald
Hailing from Dublin, Laoise is a musician of exceptional talent with a unique approach to blending lyric and piano compositions with textural electronic elements.
From an early age she showed promising musical talent, beginning her studies in classic piano at age five. She went on to study music at Goldsmiths University of London. Here, Laoise began to challenge her classical training.
She developed an improvisational approach to her creative practice based on Derek Baileys philosophy of non – idiomatic improvisation. This approach became fundamental to her work.
Growing up, Laoise studied voice at the Royal Irish Academy of Music and further developed her vocal skills at Goldsmiths. The ethereal quality of her voice is nicely juxtaposed with electronically processed vocal tracks, producing a sound that is beautifully ominous.
You Fall Like Snow is the latest single by Dublin-Based composer and vocalist Laoise FitzGerald. Set for release on 18/05/23. A comforting song with a playful melody that was written by Laoise to her infant self.
A gentle exploration of existence as a little girl, and the realisation that one can learn to reparent themselves. The song begins with a felted piano and banjo sound, accompanying Laoise’s vocals as she sings reassurances and hope to her infant self.
The verses are punctuated by the lyric “Everything you need is inside of you.” As the song progresses, listeners are transported into a vast, imaginative soundscape, featuring cello arpeggios, trombone triplets, muted rhythm, electric guitar, and fiddle tremolos.
A sense of childhood innocence shines through as the song builds to a crescendo in the second chorus. This is followed by a delicate tune played on the piano and fiddle, leading into a whispering
lullaby outro.
“You Fall Like Snow” is a personal and intimate song that balances childhood innocence
with complicated arrangements and intuitive lyrics. Fans of artists such as Laura Marling and
Kate Bush will appreciate this haunting, yet inspiring piece of work.
You Fall Like Snow is taken from the forthcoming EP How To Swallow Spiders, set for release on June 16th.
With her previous single ‘Before We Face The Morning’ garnering support from Hotpress and Lilian Smith on RTE Radio 1, We are excited to share this new single.
I Can’t Make You Love Me - Bonnie Raitt
When I was young I would find music on YouTube and try to figure out how to play the songs on piano. This one has stayed with me. I still play it now and then.
Both Sides Now - Joni Mitchell
This album was played a lot in my house growing up. This song will never get old.
David Bowie narrates Peter & The Wolf
The earliest musical memory I have is listening to this In play school when I was maybe 2 or 3. Every instrument plays a different character. The strings play Peter walking through the woods, Grandpa played by the bassoon, and the wolf played by the French horns. I have vivid memories of being consumed by this story and the sounds of the instruments playing the characters.
Aisatsana - Aphex Twin
This is one of my favourite piano pieces. It is an example of how moving simplicity and space can be in composition. I also love the quality of the recording. This was performed in the Barbican as an installation piece. There was a grand piano hanging from the roof on a platform swinging back and forth.
About You Now - The Sugababes
There are so many great things happening in this song. The crunchy Lo-fi drum machine sound, the synth solo, simple harmonies, and of course the epic girl group singing. It feels so nostalgic to listen to this. I think pop music can be dismissed as not sophisticated enough, especially for women in girl groups. But this song is soooo good.
My Lagan Love - Chieftans // Lisa Hannigan
My Lagan Love is a traditional Irish air. It has a beautiful melody. I have been singing it for years and It is one of my favorite songs to sing!
The Jig of Live - Kate Bush
This song is a journey with so many different layers!! Kate Bush has influenced a lot of my music but especially this song. I love the double-stopping fiddle, and the uilleann pipes, I love the weird spoken bit when she says “I put this moment …. Here”, and the way it's produced, with the panning. It's so good. I think Hounds of Love is one of the best albums ever.
What He Wrote - Laura Marling
I really admire Laura Marling as a lyricist. The whole I Speak Because I Can album is great. But this song in particular is so beautifully written and the melody is great.
Everything In Its Right Place - Radiohead
It’s hard to pick just one Radiohead song !! I really like the weird vocal distortions in this song with the lovely warm Rhodes sound. I really admire Thom Yorke's ability to make such epic, dark, intense music that is so nuanced. The arrangements and instrumentation in their work are so cool it’s almost cinematic, like four-dimensional listening. There is so much greatness in Radiohead. I think they’re my favourite band ever.
To Your Health - Keaton Henson
Keaton Henson is a bit nihilistic and dark but I love his work and it comforted me through some dark times. His lyrics are so evocative and his orchestral work is stunning!
